Brunch

It seems that all of the upscale hotels offer a luxurious brunch on the weekends. We were treated to one last Sunday as a welcome to Mumbai and I've been told that my colleagues favor it for birthday celebrations also. And they are truly a luxury experience.

Initial Observations...

My employer hooked up my internet before I arrived. It stopped working after two days. Upon getting it fixed yesterday, we discovered the building administration cut the wires because they were hung dangling outside the building rather than via the wire chamber inside the building, which was 'unsightly and against the rules'...but didn't tell anyone. It's fixed now...and I gues
s there's no rule for the 'unsightly' bird poop.

Water boils really fast here. Much faster than in Bogota. And my tea stays hotter longer.

The monsoon rains are fascinating. No thunder, no lighting, but gusts of wind and rain appear seemingly out of nowhere, at curious angles, then stop just as quickly. The pockets of nature in the city are lush and despite being stuck in traffic, watching children run through the rain and splash in puddles makes you smile.

The Indian consulate in Colombia outsources their visa processing to a Spanish company which made a typo on my work visa (business instead of employment) which was not accepted by the ministry of immigration here, although they understood it was a typo by the memo at the bottom of my visa noting I would be working, not starting a company. Corrections are in process.

Everyone speaks English in Mumbai...and everyone speaks English in their own personal accent, with their own personal inflection, and their own personal word and syntax combinations. I'm not sure even they fully understand each other 100%.

I am still suffering jet lag confused sleeping patterns but have seen every sunrise since I arrived. I can see the airport runway from my window and hear the muslim call to prayer and fasting break for Ramadan.

The admin and staff at my new job are powerhouses of energy, attentiveness, efficiency, and resourcefulness. They are easily the most impressive thing thus far about India.

Last Minute Details

So my summer was spent in Ohio visiting friends and family, lounging by the pool at the Y, and attending ethnic food festivals as one does where I grew up. I made a point of taking in all the large open spaces and greenery knowing that I'll most likely not have that luxury in India.

Save for a few minor obstacles (damaged in the box brand new suitcase; learning that my shipment left Colombia a month late; last minute mailing of stuff that won't fit in the suitcase), summer was relaxing and enjoyable.

I avoided shopping for anything other than the bare minimum to take with me also knowing that I had excess and overweight bags, which is why I cashed in miles and bumped myself up to first class. woo hoo!
